Crossing a Busy Strait

20120201-234141.jpg

Want to see one snapshot of what global trade looks like? Whenever we’re on the coast in China, we can’t help but notice the multitudes of container ships passing back and forth across the horizon. But when we rode the big ferris wheel on the Singapore waterfront, we really got to see some crowded waterways. Here, something like 30% of the world’s trade (if I recall correctly) passes through the Straits of Malacca between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. This view is of ships rounding the island of Singapore to the east. The picture here is only one half of the panorama, which includes dozens more large ships passing around each other to the south. I’ll upload the full view when we get back. Until then, we’re off to Java and then Manila.
