Lunging Forward and Looking Back

In China, when a kid turns one, they play that old game where they lay out a bunch of objects representing different pathways in life, including things like a paintbrush, or some money, or a globe, and the baby indicates his future vocation by reaching for one of them first.

Well, Owen did a quick survey of the junk in front of him and reached right for the syringe/dropper thing we use to fluoridate his water.  It was the best thing we could find to represent the medical profession.

So, as Owen crawled away with a syringe dangling from his mouth, we nodded approvingly with our Chinese friends.  He will be a doctor.  Possibly also a drug addict. Or worse, a dentist.  The game doesn’t reveal specifics.

Anyway, by the time Owen grows up and leaves home, he’ll probably be ready to find somewhere nice and quiet to settle down.  In his first twelve months, he’s already moved to China, and on top of that travelled through fifteen provinces, one provincial-level city, two special administrative regions, one break-away province exercising de facto independence, eight countries, and also three U.S. states.  A look back:
